Department of Mental Health Nursing

History of Department

Mental Health Nursing is taught as a major subject in nursing education for the Three Year Nursing and Midwifery Curriculum in all Nursing Training Schools throughout Myanmar. In nursing education program, five core Nursing Components play an essential requirement for all nursing candidates which includes:

1. Adult Health Nursing,
2. Maternal and Child Health Nursing,
3. Community Health Nursing,
4. Fundamental Nursing, and
5. Mental Health Nursing.

Since the implementation of B.N.Sc (Bridge Course) in 1991, Nurses Training Center has been upgraded as Institute of Nursing, where five major departments were formed including “Department of Mental Health Nursing” that was run by Professor U Maung Maung, Professor/Head since 1991 to 2001 as the Head of Department. After his retirement in 2001, Professor Daw Yin Mya was leading the department as Professor/Head until 2009. After her retirement in 2009, Daw Hla Hla Aye was leading the department as Professor/Head until 2017. Now, Daw Aye Aye Kyi is leading the department as Associate Professor/Head.

Department Mission

Our Department expected 
• conduct various mental health nursing educational programs 
• produce nurse leaders in the field of mental health
• strengthen mental health nursing research 
• produce competent mental health nurses 

Department Objectives

Department of Mental Health Nursing Program will be able:
• To conduct various mental health nursing educational program (Master, B.N.Sc (generic), B.N.Sc (bridge), Specialty, other)
• To provide leadership in the field of mental health
• To provide clinical learning experience to the students of various programs
• To strengthen research focusing on mental health nursing discipline 
• To produce nurses competent in providing mental health care at primary, secondary and tertiary levels.
